**2.5 stars**"Showdown in Durango" was, in some ways, better than I expected. I honestly thought it was going to be terrible but it had some surprisingly sweet and tender moments and some very sexy moments. However, this book was brought down by some pretty heavy handed melodrama. It read much like a soap opera. The twists and turns were too fast and too angst-ridden to come across as realistic. Poor Johnny was just put through the ringer, (who knew they were so many gay men in the wild west!) and just followed along with everything with child-like naivety. In addition, his relationship with Andy seemed strangely thrown together. And OH did it bug me when they called each other "pardner". It was like a gay wild west parody.

Showdown in Durango edition by Derek Adams Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Book provided by the publisher.
This was an OK read. I liked some of the characters but I wasn't that keen on the first half of the story. A bit sad at one part near the end
I received this book through NetGalley, my thanks to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for letting me read it.
This story had some promise, but it was bogged down by the soap opera style twists and turns. The one at the end was especially over the top melodramatic. I didn't feel the connection between the characters at all, and it felt too much like insta-love considering the horror that has been Johnny's life.
I enjoyed this novella by Derek Adams. I've always liked cowboys, so that didn't hurt. I found Johnny Dalton's journey from the slums of New York to the wild west to be quite engaging. The story was filled with gripping scenes. There is a chilling encounter with thugs in the stairwell of his tenement in the roughest slums, a wrenching scene of his sexual initiation in a male whorehouse, an encounter with rampaging Indians and desperate outlaws and a shootout that leads to Johnny's near-lynching by an angry mob.
The relationship that develops between Johnny and Sheriff Andy Shepherd is sketched out in a series of increasingly erotic scenes. I loved their encounter at the swimming hole, their afternoon fishing session on the banks of a creek and the scene where they finallly consummate their relationship.
There is a ton of action packed into this short book and it makes for a very satisfying read. The ending moved me to tears, but left me with an optimistic feeling for Johnny's future.
A gripping read.
