13th century England The nobility is aligning against King John in a struggle for power. The kingdom is embroiled in war and bankrupt, and the Crusades are rampaging through the Middle East. The Dawnings are a once-powerful family of English knights who are facing the bleak prospects of their declining power and imminent destruction at the hands of enemies that surround them both at home and abroad.

The first book in the Crusades series, The Knights Dawning, sets the stage for a titanic struggle for survival that could consume a family, a people, and a kingdom. The epic battles and action-packed scenes are coupled with deep characters and complex relationships that give the story a depth beyond ordinary adventure novels. Join the Dawnings as they feud over power, love, jealousies, and old grudges that threaten to destroy the family from within at the moment they most need to stand united.

I got this ebook while being offered free and found it a good read. Rather an intricate tale, unfolding in time by means of numerous flashbacks most of which can be easily identified as being such because they are in italics. Toward the end of the book, though, the flashbacks are NOT put into italics, which I hope is an editing error rather than deliberate. Unlike a previous reviewer I did find all these flashbacks sometimes confusing, though I would not necessarily change them or eliminate any. The reader simply must resign him or herself to the necessity of investing a little effort to figure out what is going on when and to/with whom. On the whole the book is well-written and the story is interesting, every bit as much a psychological drama as an action adventure. I am particularly intrigued by the hints of redemptive transformation that have occurred and would enjoy seeing how the author goes about unfolding those developments.

Not sure how accurate some of the historical details are but I found them interesting enough to want to do a little research to confirm or refute, for example, the device of having Muslim infiltration of English feudal life. The book definitely ends with a cliff hanger situation, so if the reader has become involved at all with the characters and story he or she will want to read the next book. Whether I personally will be willing to pay $10 for that privilege is another matter. I read free classics on my kindle, mostly, when not checking out the new titles offered at no cost. But once in a while I will ... though if I like a book enough to pay for it I will generally prefer to get a "real" copy, if available, so that I can lend it afterwards to others.

The Knights Dawning The Crusades Series Book 1 edition by James Batchelor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The characters in the book are too flawed for my taste! I didn't want to go on after the first chapter, but then got caught up in it! I was debating whether to buy the next in the series and decided not to. The frustration with the characters for me was a deal breaker. I couldn't stand reading about them anymore!
The book is interesting. I think it is more fiction than historical, still it held my interest and moved well.
I loved this book, but it's a cliff hanger and the 2nd book in the series is $7.99 for . The 3rd book is due out at the end of the year which leads me to believe that The Knights Mourning (Book 2) will also be a cliff hanger! Not sure I want to spend that much for the 2nd book knowing I will be forced to buy a 3rd book just so I can see how the story ends!!! I hate cliff hangers!!!!
I downloaded The Knights Dawning (The Crusades Series) to read on my on a recent cruise and it was the best book I downloaded for this trip. It was so interesting I could hardly put it down to do some of the excursions we had planned. The characters were well thought out and grew as the story developed, some as heroes and others as villains. As I progressed through the book, I found myself making predictions about what was going to happen. The author is much more creative than I am. I was always wrong about where the story was going. This book took me through adventures I did not imagine would happen. As a former history teacher, I found myself enthralled with the story. This book has exciting action, adventure, respectful romance. It was just perfect for me and my daughter who was on the cruise with me. I recommended she read it as soon as I finished. I am looking forward to Book 2 in this series so I can find out what happens next to this family.
I am a fan of the Middle Ages so it is not a surprise that I enjoyed this book. My only slightly negative comments are that the flashback chapters, while well written and very smoothly integrated into the book, are too numerous. The use of italic print to differentiate them from the continuing story is an excellent choice so they don't detract from the story line as much as they might. In addition, I believe that the author has taken some liberties with time lines within the story. For example the speed at which communication appears to happen between England and the Middle East seems to be off. It may be only my impression as there are no dates or direct references but the speed at which the rescue party returns seems out of line as does communication between the Saracens.

Those minor points being stated, I enjoyed the story line, the character and scene development and the fact that the characters seem 'solid'. They have warts like all people do and felt 'real' to me. The Dawning siblings display the same tendencies that priveleged people do to this day.

All in all I think you will enjoy the book if you like this time period. I anxiously await more of the story.
The author tells how he reordered a few historical events to fit the story - fair enough, but the whole story revolves around a knight, trained by a Japanese martial arts expert over a century before Marco Polo reached China. He even had paper walls and tatami floors, something not found in Europe for hundreds of years. I found the discussion between two knights about possums and sloths amusing as those animals come from Australasia and the Americas. The Islamic plot in 12th century England is interesting, but how two house servants, from opposing Baronies, arranged clandestine meetings in the night when they would be living many miles apart and with no access to horses is beyond my understanding. Perhaps they jumped on their mopeds. There were more inconsistencies, but enough said.

Having said all of that, even though I thought of giving up more than once, I did read the book to the end, hence the three stars.
The author explained he did a number with reality, which I am OK with, after all, it IS his story. But I would have liked something to stay true to the period. Using modern slang was the thing that started me thinking negatively about this book. Then there was the fact that none of the characters was very likeable. The story shifted view a lot and while some of the past was in italics, not all of it was and it became confusing. I was confused most of the time anyway.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this to anyone.
